Cost of Follow-up in Barrie

A message from a friend today reminded me of something that I've known for over a month but never posted: as of October 15th, Barrie Vascular Imaging has been charging $250 for a Doppler ultrasound follow-up of CCSVI treatment.  It's only reasonable that they would charge for it since they are not being reimbursed by Medicare.

  1. Ted, we went to BVI and had the doppler ultrasound done on November 10. The results were wonderful with Dianne's veins all fully open with blood flowing freely and properly 3.5 months after her procedure. We were told at the clinic that the Ontario government told them to start charging the fee or there would be trouble. According to the people at the clinic, they were prepared to continue to provide the service at no fee 1)as a service to suppport CCSVI angioplasty patients and 2)to an to build up the follow-up database for Dr. MacDonald research. We still have a long way to go!

  2. I've been to Barrie twice for follow ups after my ccsvi procedure in May/June 2010 and both times i had to pay $250, considering at the moment he is one of the very few reputable clinics in Canada, he should be ashamed of himself for charging that amount, knowing full well that the majority of MS patients are on fixed incomes! There are so many people with MS going to him for one reason or another he could very well reduce his fees because as long as his clinic is open to ms patients he will make his money and profit!!!!! After All he does many other scans that are covered by the government/ohip.

I do not care about the 250.00. I just need to have the DOP ULTRA procedure done

  5. Luigi, have you already had the treatment done? If so, I can tell you how to get in contact with the people there. However, if you have not yet been treated, I understand that you need to get your doctor to send a referral... I think the info for that is on the BVI web site.

Maria, I can't for the life of me see what Dr. MacDonald should be ashamed of: he has to pay his bills and there is no one else in the world doing the assessment for a paltry $250... what in the world are you thinking?

  6. No, I haven't had the Lib procedure. I want to have the Dop-Ultra to see if the veins are blocked before I proceed. I called the clinic today, waiting list is 1 yr!

  7. I'm sorry to hear that, Luigi, but I think that there will be new assessment sites opening up in Canada this winter.
